What is the Structured Literacy (Orton-Gillingham) Approach?

Structured literacy (Orton-Gillingham) is a multisensory, interactive approach to instruction specifically designed to match the skills and needs of those with dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham approach has been around for over 70 years, and its principles have been tested, researched, and validated with positive results, over and over again. Using the OG approach, Lexercise customizes language learning to the needs of individual children. Through the motivating daily practice built into the Lexercise system, children advance more quickly and shorten the total time needed to advance to grade-level reading.

“Our son[‘s] confidence has continued to build. He also really enjoys the computer instruction throughout the week. He does his practice every day without complaint, and he loves unlocking new levels and seeing his points increase, and meeting his goals. I also really like how Lexercise lays out the parent portion – I always know exactly what he and I need to do together to strengthen his skills and the activities are often enjoyable and varied. I feel like we have a solid partner in his reading journey!

“I am a Speech-Language Pathologist…I know the importance of providing the right remediation. With Lexercise, for the first time, we were able to address our son’s specific reading needs and as a result his reading skills have greatly improved. Even more important to us though, his self-confidence and self-esteem have improved.”

Still Have Questions?

Explore our Frequently Asked Questions below or contact us. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have about our program.

  • What is the main difference between Basic Therapy and Professional Therapy?

The main differences are pricing and customization.

Both Basic and Professional Therapies use the same structured literacy (Orton-Gillingham) curriculum that is proven to help with reading, writing, and spelling challenges.

Professional Therapy costs more because you are paying for a professional therapist to customize your child’s lessons and practice and to provide you with ongoing support and advice, on top of delivering to you and your child a weekly live lesson. Having this level of therapist support allows your child to make faster progress. If you have the budget, this is the recommended route.

Basic Therapy gives you the opportunity to get affordable, structured literacy (Orton-Gillingham) therapy for your child. It’s self-paced, which means you can do it on your schedule. You will deliver the lessons using our interactive slide player narrated by an expert therapist, and you will keep the student on track and moving forward through the lessons. You can message your assigned therapist with brief questions and have the opportunity to purchase a 45-minute session with your therapist if you hit material with which you and your child would like help.

  • How much of my time will this require each week?

In Professional Therapy, you will attend the weekly 45-minute session with your child and therapist. There are optional shared activities you can do with your child in addition to their daily 15-minutes of independent MyLexercise games practice.

In Basic Therapy, you can view an optional 8 minute parent training video before delivering a 1 hour weekly lesson to your child using our interactive slide player. You also have access to optional shared activities you can do with your child for each lesson.

Lessons are designed to be completed in one week. For example, Monday you might do the lesson with your child and then Tuesday through Friday you and your child would do the online games and shared activities for practice so that your child can master the material and move on to the next lesson. The following week you move your child to the next lesson and repeat the process with the new information.

  • How many lessons are there?

The Lexercise Structured Literacy Curriculum has a total of 44 lessons available in the Basic Therapy subscription. The first lessons start with the most basic concepts of reading, writing and spelling. As your child advances, the lessons build upon past material. This allows your child to master the most complex concepts of English so that they can move forward in life as a confident, secure student.

Professional Therapy has the 44 lessons mentioned above, plus an additional 8 lessons focused on pre-reader skill development for a total of 52 lessons. These pre-reader skill lessons are only available working with a therapist in Professional Therapy.

  • Why do we only have one live session each week for Professional Therapy?

In traditional Orton-Gillingham therapy the tutor or therapist sees the student for a one-hour session twice or three times per week. During a session the therapist teaches the student new material (direct instruction) and also does practice activities with the student.

In contrast, Lexercise splits the direct instruction and practice. You and your child meet with your therapist once per week in a video session where the therapist will provide any needed review and direct instruction on new material. Then the other days of the week your child will do their MyLexercise practice and you can also do shared activities with them to reinforce what was taught in the live session. (Lexercise clients doing their daily practice get significantly more practice than if they were doing a twice-a-week traditional O-G session. They will receive over 600 of what we call "response challenges" per week!)

All of this allows the therapist to focus the live, one-on-one video session on teaching new lesson material and using their expertise to address your child's individual needs because the Lexercise platform is providing your client much more practice than would be humanly possible in the traditional therapy model.

  • My child already spends too much time on a screen, so I am concerned with additional screen time.

There has been a shift in the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on screen time for children. “The new guidelines, especially for very young children, shift the focus from WHAT is on the screen to WHO else is in the room” (Kamenetz, 2016). Lexercise lessons are built around adult-child interactions and conversations, which is very much in line with the AAP recommendations on screens and screen time. Read more in this blog article.

  • Is Teletherapy as Effective as In-Person Therapy?

Teletherapy is very effective. Even before the 2020 pandemic, there was mounting evidence that online services (i.e. teletherapy services) are at least as effective as the same type of therapy delivered on-site (Hetherton, 2013) .

Teletherapy allows for families to attend even when a family member is ill plus there is no travel time or traffic. Our highly skilled reading therapists are experts at engaging children in the video conference setting.

  • Can I switch from Basic Therapy to Professional Therapy and vice versa?

Yes, you can! We suggest that, if it is within your budget, it is best to start with Professional Therapy, then move to Basic Therapy after some months if cost is a concern.
