Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between Basic Therapy and Professional Therapy?
The main differences are pricing and customization. Both Basic and Professional Therapies use the same structured literacy (Orton-Gillingham) curriculum that is proven to help with reading, writing, and spelling challenges.
Basic Therapy
An affordable, self-paced structured literacy (Orton-Gillingham) program led by parents using interactive video lessons. Families can message their assigned therapist with brief questions and purchase additional support if needed.
Professional Therapy
Includes a weekly live lesson with a licensed therapist who personalizes instruction and provides ongoing parent support. This high level of guidance often leads to faster progress and is ideal for families who want comprehensive support.
How much of my time will reading therapy require each week?
Basic Therapy
- Watch a brief 8-minute parent training video (optional)
- Lead a 30-minute weekly lesson using interactive videos
- Access optional parent-child activities for extra practice
Professional Therapy
- Attend a 45-minute live session each week with your child and therapist
- Optional shared activities to reinforce learning at home
For Both Options
- Daily 15-minute independent game practice to build and reinforce skills
Weekly Structure
- Day 1: Complete the lesson (with therapist or parent-led)
- Days 2–5: Practice through games and optional activities
- Next week: Move on to the next lesson and repeat
Is online reading therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Teletherapy (online therapy) is very effective.
Even before the 2020 pandemic, there was mounting evidence that online services (i.e. teletherapy services) are at least as effective as the same type of therapy delivered on-site (Hetherton, 2013).
Teletherapy allows for families to attend even when a family member is ill, plus there is no travel time or traffic. Our highly skilled reading therapists are experts at engaging children in the video conference setting.
Can I switch from Basic Therapy to Professional Therapy and vice versa?
Yes, you can! We suggest that, if it is within your budget, it is best to start with Professional Therapy, then move to Basic Therapy after some months if cost is a concern.
How many lessons are there?
Basic Therapy
- 44 total lessons
- Starts with foundational reading, writing, and spelling skills
- Progressively builds to more advanced concepts for full mastery
Professional Therapy
- 52 total lessons
- Includes the same 44 core lessons
- + 8 additional pre-reader lessons
- Pre-reader lessons are only available with a therapist
How the Curriculum Works
- Lessons build on each other step-by-step
- Designed to help your child master complex English skills
- Supports long-term confidence and independence in learning
Why do we only have one live session each week for Professional Therapy?
Traditional Orton-Gillingham therapy typically meets 2–3 times per week, with each session split between teaching new material and practice.
Lexercise takes a different approach by separating those two components. Your child meets with a therapist once per week for focused, one-on-one instruction and personalized support. The rest of the week, they build skills through guided online practice and optional activities at home.
Because your child is practicing daily, often completing 600+ responses per week, they receive significantly more repetition than in a traditional model. This allows the live session to stay focused on what matters most: expert teaching tailored to your child’s needs.
My child already spends too much time on a screen, so I am concerned with additional screen time.
There has been a shift in the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on screen time for children.
“The new guidelines, especially for very young children, shift the focus from WHAT is on the screen to WHO else is in the room” (Kamenetz, 2016).
Lexercise lessons are built around adult-child interactions and conversations, which is very much in line with the AAP recommendations on screens and screen time. Read more in this blog article.
