Science-Backed Reading Intervention That Works

Lexercise helps struggling readers make measurable, lasting gains with methods proven by research and certified by ESSA. Our structured literacy approach, grounded in the Science of Reading has helped thousands of students for nearly 20 years.

Proven Science of Reading Framework

Lexercise is grounded in the Science of Reading, a well established  body of knowledge summarized in The Simple View of Reading. The Simple View explains reading comprehension as the product of two main components:

1) comprehension of spoken language and 2) written word recognition. Our structured literacy approach applies this research through explicit, systematic instruction in all critical components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, syllables, morphology, words, syntax, and semantics. This ensures that struggling readers receive comprehensive support to develop fluent, confident reading skills.

ESSA-Certified, Evidence-Based

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a law governing public education policy,  emphasizes the use of evidence-based interventions to improve student outcomes. Evidence requirements and tiers under ESSA are designed to ensure that schools and districts can identify programs and teaching methods that are supported by research.

ESSA certification facilitates informed decision-making for schools and helps align schools’ funding opportunities with federal-law requirements. Learn more about our ESSA certification and our peer-reviewed research study.

Reading Intervention Verified by Research

Lexercise stands by its promise to deliver high-impact results to struggling readers. We analyzed data from almost 4,000 students using the Lexercise program. To be eligible, students had to attend one weekly 45-minute lesson with a literacy expert and complete at least 4 days of independent student practice per week for eight consecutive weeks.

The results were clear – 94% of the students achieved at least one year of reading growth in just 8 weeks. This was true for students across all grade levels, from 1-12, indicating that with the right intervention, all struggling readers can and will improve!

Validation of Game- Based Assessment

A 2023 study presented at the International Dyslexia Association compared Lexercise’s game-based decoding assessment to a traditional educator-administered task. Results showed no statistical difference in student performance across both methods, confirming that Lexercise’s online practice games are a valid tool for monitoring decoding accuracy in students ages 6–14.
