Proven Science of Reading Framework

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) guides public education policy by promoting the use of research-based programs. As a first step in this process, ESSA helps districts identify programs that are thoughtfully designed and grounded in credible research with the ESSA Level 4 evidence tier.

The Science of Reading

The Science of Reading’s foundational theoretical model is known as The Simple View of Reading (SVR). Backed by decades of research, this seemingly simple model reveals a profound truth about how proficient reading is achieved: word recognition and listening comprehension are interconnected; a weakness in either significantly impacts reading comprehension.

The scientific consensus, as depicted in the SVR, is that reading comprehension (R) is the product of listening comprehension (LC) and word recognition (WR). It is summarized as:  R = LC x WR.

This model, emphasizing the distinct yet interconnected and crucial roles of language comprehension and decoding, provides the science-based framework for Lexercise.

Structured Literacy

Structured literacy is a direct application of the Science of Reading for the classroom. It is an explicit, systematic, and cumulative approach to teaching foundational literacy skills. Rooted in the understanding of how the brain learns to read, structured literacy focuses on key components of language: phonological awareness, phonics, syllables, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

Following the science of reading and the SVR, Lexercise has operationalized the key components for effective reading intervention into the Lexercise Structured Literacy Curriculum™, ensuring that struggling readers receive intervention that includes all the components necessary to build fluent and automatic reading, writing, and spelling.

The Lexercise curriculum consists of 44 lessons, each broken down into the 7 stations below.

Implementation Based on the
Science of Learning

Following the principles of the Science of Learning, Lexercise combines explicit, interactive, and engaging lessons with frequent, high-dosage, deliberate practice that includes immediate feedback to achieve optimal learning outcomes.
