Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lexercise Dyslexia Test?

Our dyslexia test assesses the fundamentals of reading skills rather than focusing on their symptoms, making it a more accurate assessment for students of all ages. This quick 2-part assessment checks both the student’s ability to read single words taken from grade-level materials (pre-primer through 11th grade) and the student’s basic decoding skills that are expected to be mastered in Kindergarten.

What is the Dyslexia Z-Screener™?

The Lexercise Dyslexia Z-Screener™ is one part of the Lexercise Dyslexia test.  It is an online test of a student’s ability to decode simple but unfamiliar words. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) include decoding regularly spelled, single-syllable words with short vowel sounds under Foundational Skills at a Kindergarten level.

Many students with dyslexia can recognize familiar words but still struggle with decoding new ones, especially those with short vowels. By starting words with “z,” the screener emphasizes the vowel and final consonants, which are often the most challenging for students with processing difficulties.

The test increases in difficulty across nine bands and automatically stops when a student makes five errors in a band. This allows it to quickly pinpoint decoding difficulties commonly missed in tests that use only real words.

What makes this test reliable?

We use the science-backed Grade-Level Reading Assessment (also known as San Diego Quick Assessment or SDQA) and our Dyslexia Z-Screener™, which was developed by Sandie Barrie Blackley, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow, a recognized expert in literacy disorders and speech-language pathology.

The SDQA presents a list of words categorized by grade level, and is used to estimate a student’s reading level and identify word analysis errors. It provides insight into how well a student can read grade-level material.

Together, the SDQA and the Dyslexia Z-Screener™ offer a quick and reliable way to identify students who are struggling with word reading, especially those whose difficulties may be overlooked in standard assessments.

Does your test provide formal diagnosis?

Our dyslexia test is a screening tool designed to flag signs of possible dyslexia. It cannot, on its own, provide a formal diagnosis. However, research has shown that the Grade-Level Word Reading Assessment offers a fairly accurate estimate of a child’s ability to read grade-level material, making it an effective first-step screening tool.

If your child shows signs of difficulty, we’ll help you understand next steps, including options for a full diagnostic evaluation if needed. We have a team of highly skilled and qualified reading therapists and a comprehensive evaluation process that can formally diagnose dyslexia if you’re interested in pursuing this.

What ages is the dyslexia test designed for?

It’s designed for children 5 and older, especially those who are learning to read or struggling with reading. If your child isn’t available to take the brief test, you can take the symptoms quiz to judge your observations about your child.

Do I have to talk to someone to get results?

No. You’ll see your results instantly online and via email. No signup or call required. You’ll be able to schedule a free consultation with a qualified reading therapist if you’d like support, but it’s completely optional.

Is my child’s information private?

Yes. Your information is private, secure, and never shared or sold. The test is fully compliant with educational privacy standards.
